Classic Surf Music – Surfin’ with the Astronauts
Posted on Wednesday, 21 April 2010 02:55
Surf music began in the early 1960s as instrumental dance music, almost always dominated by electric guitars like the Fender Jaguar and Mustang. The sound was particularly characterized by the extensive use of the “wet” spring reverb that was incorporated into Fender amplifiers from 1961, which is thought to emulate the sound of the waves. One of our favourite’s is The Astronauts who recorded the haunting tune ‘The Hearse’. The Astronauts were from Boulder, CO, their lineup included Bob Demmon, Dennis Lindsey, Rich Fifield, Storm Patterson, and Jim Gallagher. Their first and most successful album was Surfin’ with the Astronauts, featuring the single “Baja.”
